Invitation messages

Engagement invitation messages: roka, sagai and ring ceremony

Short answer

A good engagement invitation message says whose engagement it is, whether it's a roka, sagai or ring ceremony, and the date, time and venue. For WhatsApp, a simple engagement invitation message of one or two lines works best, with a map link. Engagements are often fixed at short notice, so send it two to four weeks ahead, and call elders before the message goes out.

An engagement comes together faster than a wedding. The families agree, a date is picked, and within a few weeks the relatives need to know. That is why most engagement invitations go out on WhatsApp. Below are engagement invitation messages for every kind of function, from a small roka at home to a ring ceremony with a dinner, plus the wording for an engagement card.

Roka, sagai or ring ceremony: what changes in the invite?

Families use the words differently. In many North Indian families the roka is the first, small function where both sides formally agree to the match, often at home with close family. The sagai or ring ceremony follows, with rings exchanged in front of a larger gathering, sometimes with a dinner. Some families combine the two, and in other regions the same function has its own name, like the sakharpuda or nichayathartham.

For the invitation, the difference is size and tone. A roka invite is personal and short, and often a phone call. A sagai invite reads like a smaller wedding invitation. Use the name your family uses, and say what the evening involves so guests know how to dress.

What to put on an engagement card

An engagement card is shorter than a wedding card. It usually has, in this order:

  1. A blessing line, such as ॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥ or the family's own.
  2. The hosts: the parents or both families.
  3. The invitation line and the couple's names, with their parents' names.
  4. The ceremony (roka, sagai or ring ceremony), with the date, time and venue.
  5. A closing line and, if needed, “RSVP” with a name and number.

Full wording for the wedding card, line by line, is in Indian wedding card wording.

  • Engagement card, English

  • सगाई कार्ड, हिंदी

Engagements are when the questions start: which venue, what time, where to park. An invitation website on WhatsApp answers them with a map and the timing, and when the wedding date is set, the same link can carry every function. The wedding invitation messages guide has the messages for that.

Questions

Questions people ask

What do you write in an engagement invitation message?
Who is inviting, whose engagement it is, the date, time and venue, and whether it is a roka, sagai or ring ceremony. Add a reply-by date if it is a seated dinner. Keep it short; engagements are often planned in a few weeks, so the date matters most.
How do you write a simple engagement invitation message on WhatsApp?
One or two lines: “[Bride] and [Groom] are getting engaged on [Date] at [Venue], [Time]. Please join us.” Add the location link so guests can open the map. Send it personally to anyone who matters, not only in the group.
Is a roka the same as an engagement?
Not always. In many North Indian families the roka is the small first function where both families agree to the match, often at home, and the sagai or ring ceremony comes later and is bigger. Some families combine them. Use the name your family uses.
How early should you send engagement invitations?
Two to four weeks before, since engagements are often fixed at short notice. For a small roka at home, a week or a phone call is normal. If the wedding date is already fixed, mention it as a save the date in the same message.
What goes on an engagement invitation card?
The blessing line, the families, the couple's names, the ceremony and its date, time and venue, and the hosts. Engagement cards are shorter than wedding cards and usually have no list of functions. Two full samples are below.
