Invitation messages

Haldi, mehendi and sangeet invitation messages

Short answer

A haldi, mehendi or sangeet invitation message needs four things the main wedding invite often leaves out: which function, the time, the venue and the dress code. Keep the tone light, because these are the fun functions, and send it as its own message if only some guests are invited. Below are 40 haldi, mehendi and sangeet invitation messages to copy, in English, Hindi and Hinglish.

Updated · Aaiyega, New Delhi

The wedding card gets the formal words. The haldi invitation message, the mehendi note and the sangeet invite are where families relax, and where most of the confusion happens: guests turn up in white to a haldi, or an hour late to a mehendi that started at noon. A good pre-wedding invitation is short and practical. It says what, when, where and what to wear, then adds one line of fun.

What should a haldi, mehendi or sangeet invitation say?

Four things: the function, the date and start time, the venue (or the home address with a landmark) and the dress code. If it is at home, add whose home it is, because cousins often have three “Mama ji's house” in their heads.

Give a real start time. Haldi is usually in the morning, mehendi runs for hours, and a sangeet with performances needs people seated before the first dance. “From 11 am” tells guests when to arrive; “morning” does not.

Dress code lines to add to any message

If you want guests in a colour, one plain line is enough. Add it at the end of the message so the time and venue stay at the top.

  • Haldi

Dress code: yellow. Wear something you won't mind getting haldi on.

  • Mehendi

Dress code: green, or any bright colour. Comfortable sleeves, please; the mehendi goes up to the elbow.

  • Sangeet

Dress code: festive and dance-ready. Heels optional, energy compulsory.

  • Colour theme

Dress code: pastels. Bride's side in pink, groom's side in blue.

  • No dress code

No dress code. Come as you are, and come hungry.

One message can carry the words; a link carries the rest. On an Aaiyega invite, every function gets its own card with the date, time, dress code, a Maps button and an Add to calendar button, so the haldi time is on every guest's phone. Questions

Questions people ask

What do you write in a haldi invitation message?
The function, the date and time, the venue and the dress code. Haldi is messy, so tell guests to wear yellow they don't mind staining, and give a start time, because haldi is usually in the morning and late arrivals miss it.
What should guests wear to haldi, mehendi and sangeet?
Yellow for haldi, green or bright colours for mehendi, and something dressy you can dance in for sangeet. Families set their own colours, so say yours in the message. If there is no dress code, say “wear something comfortable”.
When is the haldi ceremony held?
Usually on the morning of the wedding or the day before, at the bride's and groom's homes separately or at one venue. Mehendi is often the day or evening before the wedding, and sangeet the night before or two nights before.
Do haldi, mehendi and sangeet need a separate invitation?
Not always. One wedding invite can list every function. Send a separate message when only some guests are invited to a function, or when it is at home and you want to share the address and a time to arrive.
Is the sangeet only for women?
The ladies sangeet traditionally was, with dholak and songs at home. Most sangeet nights today are for everyone, with dances by both families. If yours is ladies-only, say so plainly in the message.
