Invitation messages

Wedding reception invitation messages and wording

Short answer

A wedding reception invitation message says who is hosting, whose reception it is, the date, start time and venue. From parents it is formal; from the couple it can be warm and short. For a reception-only invite, after a small or destination wedding, say so plainly so nobody feels left out. Below are 38 reception invitation messages and card wordings to copy.

Updated · Aaiyega, New Delhi

The reception is often the one function where everyone is invited: colleagues, neighbours, the parents' friends, the people who were not at the pheras. That makes the reception invitation message the most widely sent one of the whole wedding. Here are marriage reception invitation messages from parents and from the couple, reception-only invites, messages for the office, and formal wording for a reception card.

What should a wedding reception invitation message include?

Who is hosting, whose reception, the date, the start time and the venue. A reception is usually an evening with dinner, so say when guests can arrive and, if the couple will be on stage for photos, roughly when.

If the reception is for people who were not at the wedding, a single line explains it: “we had a small family wedding” or “we married in [City]”. Without it, a reception invite can feel like the consolation prize.

Reception invitation messages from parents

When the parents host, the message is formal and names the couple with their families. These suit relatives, family friends and the parents' own colleagues.

Wedding invitation wording for a reception card

For a printed or digital reception card, the wording is formal and centred. The full line-by-line structure of a card is in the wedding card wording guide.

Reception invitation messages in Hindi and Hinglish

In Hindi, the reception is often called “प्रीतिभोज” or “आशीर्वाद समारोह” on cards. In WhatsApp groups, “reception” in Hinglish is perfectly natural.

  • Hinglish, family group

Reception [Date] ko shaam [Time] baje se [Venue] par hai. Sab log zaroor aaiyega, aur dinner wahi hai! 🙏 [link]

  • Hinglish, friends

Shaadi ho gayi, ab party baaki hai 😄 Reception [Date], [Venue], [Time] se. Aana hi padega!

A reception invite gets forwarded more than any other, often to people who will need directions. Sending it as an invitation link on WhatsApp means the venue map, the time and an RSVP travel with it. For the functions before the wedding, see haldi, mehendi and sangeet messages; for a nikah followed by a walima, see nikah invitation wording.

Questions

Questions people ask

What do you write in a reception invitation message?
Who is hosting, whose reception it is, the date, the start time and the venue. If guests were not at the wedding itself, say the wedding was small or private, so the reception invite doesn't read as a second-class one.
Who hosts the wedding reception in India?
In many North Indian families the groom's side hosts the reception after the bride comes home, but there is no fixed rule. Either family, both together, or the couple can host it, and the invitation simply names whoever is inviting.
Can you invite some people only to the reception?
Yes, and it is common. Colleagues, neighbours and wider circles are often invited only to the reception. Send them a reception message on its own, with no mention of the other functions, so nobody feels left out.
What time should a reception invitation give?
The time guests can start arriving, usually the evening, and the time the couple will be on stage if there is one. “From 7.30 pm” is clearer than “evening”. Mention dinner if guests should not eat first.
Do you need a separate reception card?
Only if the reception is hosted by a different family or invites a different list. Otherwise the reception can be one line on the main card, or one card on a wedding invite link, with its own map.
