Most wedding invitation wording in India is written once and copied by the printer, which is why the same slightly stiff lines appear on card after card. This guide goes through the marriage card matter in English line by line, in the order it is printed, with short samples for each line and complete cards at the end. If you are writing in Hindi, see [wedding card matter in Hindi](https://aaiyega.com/wedding-card-matter-in-hindi); for the WhatsApp message that goes with the card, see [wedding invitation messages](https://aaiyega.com/wedding-invitation-messages).

## What is the order of wording on an Indian wedding card?

Almost every Indian card, whatever the community, follows the same sequence. Keep to it and guests will find what they are looking for without reading every word:

1. **Blessing or invocation**: a line to God or the family deity, at the very top.
2. **Who is inviting**: grandparents, parents, or the couple themselves.
3. **The invitation line**: “request the pleasure of your company…”.
4. **The couple**: names, short titles and their parents.
5. **The functions**: each with day, date, time and venue.
6. **RSVP and contacts**: names and numbers for questions.
7. **The closing**: the hosts' names, “with best compliments”, and often a line from the children of the family.

A practical rule: one idea per line, dates written out (Saturday, 12 December 2026, not 12/12/26), and times with “onwards” only where the start really is flexible.

## How do you write the blessing line?

The blessing line sits above everything else, often in a different script. It is short, and it is the one line most families never change. Use the one your family uses at home; if you are unsure, ask the eldest person in the family rather than picking one for its look.

- Hindu, Ganesh
- ॥ Shri Ganeshaya Namah ॥
- Hindu, Devanagari
- ॥ श्री गणेशाय नमः ॥
- Hindu, auspicious beginning
- With the blessings of Lord Ganesha and our elders
- Sikh
- ੴ With the blessings of Waheguru
- Muslim
- Bismillah-ir-Rahman-ir-Raheem In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
- Christian
- “Two are better than one.” Ecclesiastes 4:9
- South Indian
- Sri Venkateswara Prasanna With the blessings of our family deity
- Family elders
- With the blessings of Late Shri \[Grandfather\] and Smt \[Grandmother\]

Sikh cards usually open with ੴ (Ik Onkar) and often name the gurdwara where the Anand Karaj, the four laavan around the Guru Granth Sahib, takes place. South Indian cards often name the family deity and give the **muhurtham**, the auspicious time, more prominence than the date. Muslim and Christian wording is covered fully in [nikah invitation wording](https://aaiyega.com/nikah-invitation-wording) and [Christian wedding wording](https://aaiyega.com/christian-wedding-invitation-wording).

## Which invitation line should you use?

This is the sentence that does the inviting. There are two classic forms in English. **“Request the honour of your presence”** was traditionally kept for a ceremony in a place of worship; **“request the pleasure of your company”** is for everything else, including receptions. On Indian cards “pleasure of your company” is used throughout and nobody will think it wrong.

- Classic
- Mr and Mrs \[Parents' names\] request the pleasure of your company at the wedding of their daughter
- With honour
- Mr and Mrs \[Parents' names\] request the honour of your presence at the marriage of their son
- Warmer
- With great joy, Mr and Mrs \[Parents' names\] invite you and your family to celebrate the wedding of their daughter
- Both families
- The \[Family 1\] and \[Family 2\] families joyfully invite you to the wedding of their children
- Grandparents hosting
- Shri \[Grandfather\] and Smt \[Grandmother\] cordially invite you to the wedding of their grandson
- With family
- Request the pleasure of your company with family at the auspicious wedding ceremony of

## How do you write the couple's and parents' names?

Write the couple's names a size larger than everything else, with the bride's or groom's parents directly underneath. Titles are short and conventional: **Chi.** (Chiranjeev, “may he live long”) before the groom and **Sau. Kan.** (Saubhagyakankshini, “one who wishes for marital good fortune”) or **Ayu.** (Ayushmati) before the bride, on cards from Hindu families. English-only cards often leave titles out and write the names plainly.

Whose name comes first depends on who is sending the card. The bride's family writes “\[Bride\] with \[Groom\]”, the groom's family writes “\[Groom\] with \[Bride\]”. That is why many families print two sets. If you print one, the hosting family's child goes first.

- Bride's family's card
- \[Bride\] (Daughter of Mr and Mrs \[Bride's parents\]) with \[Groom\] (Son of Mr and Mrs \[Groom's parents\])
- Groom's family's card
- Chi. \[Groom\] (Son of Mr and Mrs \[Groom's parents\]) with Sau. Kan. \[Bride\] (Daughter of Mr and Mrs \[Bride's parents\])
- With grandparents
- \[Groom\] Grandson of Late Shri \[Grandfather\] and Smt \[Grandmother\] Son of Mr and Mrs \[Parents\]
- With the city
- \[Bride\] D/o Mr \[Father\] and Mrs \[Mother\], \[City\]
- Simple, modern
- \[Bride\] & \[Groom\]

## How do you list the functions?

Give each function its own block: name, day and date, time, venue. If some guests are invited to only some functions, print separate inserts rather than one long list, so nobody turns up at the wrong one. Keep dress codes to a word or two.

- One function
- on Saturday, 12 December 2026 at 7:00 pm at \[Venue\], \[Address\], \[City\]
- Several functions
- Haldi · Thursday, 10 December · 11:00 am · At home Sangeet · Friday, 11 December · 7:00 pm · \[Venue\] Wedding · Saturday, 12 December · 7:00 pm · \[Venue\] Reception · Sunday, 13 December · 8:00 pm · \[Venue\]

- Muhurtham: Sunday, 13 December 2026, between 9:00 and 10:30 am at \[Kalyana Mandapam\], \[City\]
- Dress code line
- Dress code: shades of yellow

## What goes in the RSVP and contact lines?

Two or three names with numbers is enough, usually a parent and a sibling or cousin who will actually answer the phone in the wedding week. If you need a headcount, give a reply-by date. Write “Kindly reply by 25 November” rather than just “RSVP”, which many guests read as decoration.

- RSVP
- Kindly reply by \[Date\] \[Name\]: \[Number\] \[Name\]: \[Number\]
- Contacts for help
- For directions and stay: \[Name\] (\[relation\]): \[Number\]

## How should the card close?

The closing names the hosts again and adds a line of welcome. Many cards also carry a children's line, the **baal manuhar**, written as if the younger children of the family are inviting you. It is the most read line on many cards, so it's worth writing one that sounds like your family.

- With compliments
- With best compliments from \[Family name\] family and all relatives and friends
- Awaiting you
- Eagerly awaiting your gracious presence \[Hosts' names\]
- Children's line
- Mere chacha ki shaadi mein zaroor aana, nahi toh hum naraz ho jayenge! – \[Children's names\]
- Children's line, English
- Our bua is getting married, so please come and dance with us! – \[Children's names\]
- Blessings line
- Your blessings are our greatest gift.

## How do you write modern, couple-led or unique wording?

Couples who are hosting or planning the wedding themselves often write the card in their own voice. Starting with “Together with our families” keeps parents honoured. Unique wording works best when only one line is playful and the facts stay plain.

- Together with our families
- Together with our families \[Bride\] and \[Groom\] invite you to celebrate our wedding on Saturday, 12 December 2026 at \[Venue\], \[City\]
- Personal
- We met in a college library and argued about books ever since. Now we're making it official. Please join us on \[Date\] at \[Venue\].
- Short and modern
- \[Bride\] + \[Groom\] Are getting married 12.12.2026 · \[City\] Come celebrate with us

- Unique closing
- There will be food, music and a dance floor. All that's missing is you.

Before you send the matter to the printer, check three things: every name spelt the way the person spells it, every date matched to the right day of the week, and every venue with a landmark. These are the mistakes that end up on 300 cards.

If you are also sending the invitation on WhatsApp, the same words can go on an invite website with a map for each venue and an RSVP button. The [Aaiyega editor](https://aaiyega.com/designs) has blessing-line presets (Ganesh, Shubh Vivah, Ik Onkar, Bismillah) and a free-text line for a shloka or verse, so the card and the link say the same thing.

Send the words with a link that does the rest

Your message, plus an invite website: every function with its map, your song, photos and RSVP. Edit it later; the link stays the same.

Questions

## Questions people ask

What is the correct wording for an Indian wedding card in English?

Open with a blessing line, then name who is inviting, then the couple with their parents, then the date, time and venue of each function, and close with the hosts' names. “Request the pleasure of your company” is the most common invitation line on Indian cards.

Should I write “the honour of your presence” or “the pleasure of your company”?

Traditionally, “the honour of your presence” is for a ceremony in a place of worship and “the pleasure of your company” for everything else. Most Indian cards use “pleasure of your company” throughout, and either reads correctly.

Whose name comes first on an Indian wedding card?

The family sending the card puts its own child first. On the bride's family's cards it reads “\[Bride\] with \[Groom\]”; on the groom's family's cards, “\[Groom\] with \[Bride\]”. Many families print two versions for this reason.

What is “marriage card matter”?

It is the text printed on the card: the blessing line, invitation, names, functions and closing. Printers ask for the matter so they can set it in the design. Write it out fully, check every spelling and date, and send it as one document.

Can the couple invite guests themselves on the card?

Yes, and it is common now. Start with “Together with our families” and then the couple's names, so parents are still honoured. It suits couples who are hosting, paying for or planning the wedding themselves.
